Motown Funk Brother Jack Ashford: A Legend for All Times

Legendary Motown Funk Brother Jack Ashford is a world‑renowned musician whose influence has left an unmistakable mark on the music industry. As a member of the iconic ensemble known as The Funk Brothers, he and his fellow virtuosos performed on countless Motown hits throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. Together, they crafted the soundtrack of a generation—music embraced across the globe that helped define the sound and spirit of an era.

Jack’s signature tambourine artistry became one of the defining elements of the unmistakable “Motown Sound.” His work can be heard on timeless classics performed by legends such as Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Jr. Walker, Marvin Gaye, and many more.

Motown’s music continues to resonate deeply with millions around the world. The Funk Brothers’ unmatched rhythms, melodies, and musical sophistication have remained influential for more than 60 years, frequently chosen as the soundtrack for weddings, anniversaries, and life’s most meaningful celebrations. It’s often said that every two minutes, somewhere in the world, a Motown record is being played—a testament to their enduring legacy.

Jack’s remarkable career includes two Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and multiple gold records. The Funk Brothers’ legacy was further cemented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013. They were also inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2007 and the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2014. Jack’s book, Motown: A View From The Bottom, offers an engaging and deeply personal look at his journey as a consummate musician whose work on Detroit’s Grand Boulevard helped shape a musical legacy that continues to transcend time.

The acclaimed documentary “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” features Jack and his fellow Funk Brothers through exclusive interviews, archival footage, and electrifying live performances of Motown classics. The film also showcases unforgettable collaborations with artists such as Gerald Levert, Me’shell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, Chaka Khan, and Montell Jordan, vividly bringing Motown history to life. The documentary earned two Grammy Awards in 2002: Best Traditional R&B Performance for “What’s Going On” featuring Chaka Khan, and Best Compilation Soundtrack Album.

After decades of creating hit after hit and performing around the world for adoring audiences, Jack Ashford—now 90 years young—remains in demand. As the last surviving Funk Brother, his continued presence is living proof that the magic of Motown will never fade.
